Preface

The appreciation of beauty is inherent to human nature; however, interpretations of beauty often vary among individuals. My initial stirrings of "beauty" occurred during childhood visits to Foshan, where I admired my grandfather's collection of porcelain and ancient paintings featuring graceful flowers, birds, and elegant ladies.

During my academic years, I eagerly looked forward to my weekly art classes. However, after entering the workforce and starting a family, my paintbrush gradually collected dust amidst the routine of daily life. As a professional in early childhood education, I was encouraged in 1989 by my institution to pursue a diploma in in-service education (early childhood education) at the University of East Asia (now the University of Macau). This opportunity rekindled my connection with the arts, reigniting a passion that had lain dormant for years.

With the unwavering support of my husband, Chan Seng Iong, a senior member of the Macau Artist Society, I returned to painting and enrolled in classes with Master Kam Hang. Through his guidance, I had the privilege of studying landscape painting under Master Tam Ho Man, a renowned calligrapher and painter. After Master Tam relocated overseas, I continued my artistic journey by learning floral and avian techniques from Master Wu Sek Wa of the Lingnan School.

The generous teachings of these esteemed mentors not only enhanced my artistic skills but also inspired me to embrace new challenges. I am profoundly grateful for their guidance.

After retiring, I took on the role of a tour guide at the Macau Museum of Art and the Macau Museum. Over a decade of engaging with artistic treasures and delving into their historical contexts not only expanded my understanding of both Eastern and Western art history but also ignited a passion for exploring diverse artistic expressions. Embracing the belief that "beyond ink and wash lies another realm," I participated in various workshops organized by the Macau Museum of Art. In Mr. Lai Ieng's watercolor classes, I learned to capture light and shadow, while Mr. Lai Sio Kit guided me in exploring texture through oil painting.

As a member of the Macau Artist Society, I had even more opportunities for outdoor sketching and collaborative activities, further honing my skills under the mentorship of experienced peers. The camaraderie and support I found among fellow artists have been some of the most valuable gifts of my artistic journey.

This exhibition showcases not only my oil paintings, watercolors, and ink works but also several collaborative pieces created with my late husband, Chan Seng Iong. I welcome your critiques and feedback.
