Preface:

Getting older, I often recall my childhood home at Xiting, Fuzhou in Foshan: the ancestral house with three or four low rooms with blue-gray bricks, white walls and grey tiles; Its south and north sides were shaded by green trees; sunny and rainy days, sunrise and sunset constituted a series of alternating Chinese paintings. My mother loved geese, much like Wang Xizhi (303-361), the most celebrated calligrapher across history from Eastern Jin dynasty. She fed them three times a day, carefully raising them to keep them healthy and their feathers shiny. The geese made noises like songs and were very lovely. Upon returning home from the school every day, as soon as I put down the school bag, I went to herd the geese. I would pick up a mulberry stick and drive the geese to the mulberry-dyke fishpond at the end of the lane of Xiting.  The geese were overjoyed at the sight of water, as if they were seeing a paradise of freedom. In water, they gathered in twos or threes. Sometimes they swam through clear wave with their red-webbed feet, chasing each other; other times they rallied and frolicked in groups. After enough play in water, they gathered in a big flock, honking, honking, before slowly going ashore; On the shore, they first combed their feathers and then rubbed against each other. Those feeling tired would turn their necks and bury them in their shoulder blades, sitting at ease with their eyes closed being totally indifferent to the world – looking like many a Maitreya Buddha. I often used the muddy and sandy ground as paper and the mulberry stick as a brush to freely depict what my eyes beheld.

Time flies and in an instant, decades have passed. Today I re-paint the bits of childhood memories on the mica paper, reminiscing about the leisurely fun side of my early years together with the visitors
